Compare / Sonlight vs BookShark

Sonlight vs BookShark

Literature-based all-in-one packages (history, readers, and, when you buy the full package, the rest of the core). Not a math-only comparison and not an online school.

Quick take

Choose Sonlight when you want a Christian, literature-based year and you want faith in the readings and discussion, not only in a separate Bible class.

Choose BookShark when you want the same kind of planned literature year without a Christian curriculum, and you are fine with a program that leaves origins and spirituality to you.

There is no trophy winner. Both are planned around real books and an Instructor’s Guide, both sit in a high budget band, and both still need a parent in the read-aloud chair. The split is worldview, not rigor.

Day-to-day differences

Sonlight days are read-alouds, readers, and discussion from an Instructor’s Guide, with Christian faith in the material itself. Sonlight describes the program as fully planned and open-and-go, and it offers a Love to Learn, Love to Teach guarantee (a refund window even after you have used the materials; confirm the current terms on Sonlight’s site). “Open-and-go” here means you are not building the book list. It does not mean your child works alone. Parent time stays medium because someone is reading and talking.

BookShark days are the same shape: a guide, real books, discussion, and hands-on science in the science packages. BookShark schedules four days and leaves the fifth open for co-ops, errands, or catch-up. You can stretch the work onto a fifth day. Prep is light for the same reason as Sonlight. The parent is still the teacher.

BookShark’s FAQ is the line that matters for worldview. BookShark says it does not espouse or oppose any faith. Its science and history programs do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design. Origins and spirituality are left to parents. That is not the same thing as a secular science program that teaches evolution. If that is your hard filter, this is not an automatic yes.

Do not treat them as one book list with a Bible pulled out. BookShark’s own account is that the program was based on the Sonlight literature-and-guide approach with faith materials removed. That does not mean the lists are identical, and it does not mean they share no titles.

Who should pick Sonlight

Fits Christian families who want Instructor’s Guides, real books, and faith in the year’s readings, and who can give medium parent time to read-alouds. Pick Sonlight if:

  • You want a Christian literature program, preschool through high school, by package
  • You want the guide to do the scheduling so you are not assembling a book list
  • Medium parent time for reading and discussion is acceptable
  • You are ready for a high budget for a shipped package

Skip Sonlight if you need a non-Christian spine, a screen-first day, or a low-cost year. It is not secular, and it is not hands-off.

Who should pick BookShark

Fits families who want Instructor’s Guides and a literature year without a Christian curriculum, and who accept that origins are left to the parent. Pick BookShark if:

  • You want literature-based plans without Bible study built into the program
  • You are fine that science and history do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design
  • You want a 4-day guide and can still sit for read-alouds (medium parent time)
  • You want an All-Subject Package, or you are fine starting with Reading with History and adding the rest
  • A high budget for shipped books is acceptable

Skip BookShark if you need Christian readers, if you need the curriculum itself to teach evolution, or if you need a cheap or screen-only day. BookShark is not a school and is not accredited. State requirements are on you.

Who should pick neither

Take the quiz if you are hunting:

  • A low parent-time, screen-first day. See best online homeschool curriculum.
  • A free Christian checklist. Easy Peasy is the free option on the best Christian homeschool curriculum.
  • A classical, Latin-heavy program with high parent involvement. That is a different fit from these guides.
  • A secular science program that teaches evolution as part of the curriculum. BookShark does not. Read samples of any other program before you assume it does.
  • A build-your-own book list at a lower guide price, where you source the literature yourself. A shipped Sonlight or BookShark package is the convenience you are paying for.

“Neither” is a valid answer. We will not force a winner.

How we compared

We compared Sonlight and BookShark as literature-based programs with Instructor’s Guides. We did not rank them by how Christian they are, and we did not rank them by rigor.

Both are high budget, medium parent time, books, open-and-go for planning, and available from preschool into high school by package or level. Sonlight is Christian. BookShark is faith-neutral on its own FAQ, and we do not describe it as a program that teaches evolution.

Worldview wording for BookShark is taken from BookShark’s FAQ (retrieved October 3, 2026): it does not espouse or oppose any faith, and its science and history programs do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design. Sonlight’s Christian positioning is taken from Sonlight’s own description of a Christ-centered, literature-based curriculum.

FAQ

Which is better, Sonlight or BookShark?

Neither is better for every family. Sonlight when you want Christian literature and faith in the readings. BookShark when you want the guide-and-books shape without a Christian curriculum. Take the quiz if worldview is not your first filter.

Is BookShark just secular Sonlight?

No. The plan is similar: Instructor’s Guides, read-alouds, and shipped books. BookShark is not Sonlight’s Christian list with the Bible removed. BookShark calls itself faith-neutral. Its science and history programs do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design. If you need those topics taught in the curriculum, do not assume BookShark does that.

Are both open-and-go?

For planning, yes. The guide tells you what to read and discuss. For the parent’s day, no: read-alouds are medium parent time on both. Open-and-go is not unsupervised seatwork.

Does BookShark include high school?

Yes. BookShark says Level I and Level J are for high school ages, and it also offers newer World and U.S. high school levels. Sonlight sells packages from preschool through high school. Match the level chart to your child. Neither one enrolls your student in a school.
