What literature-based means
A literature-based year uses real books as the spine. Sonlight’s literature page calls this “outstanding books and delightful stories as the centerpiece for learning.” Sonlight’s philosophy page says the program requires significant parental involvement and that the parent serves as a mentor. On younger History / Bible / Literature levels, that day is reading and talk. The 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects pages describe high school as independent study: the student reads, with a Student Guide and a Parent Guide.
That is not a screen school, and it is not a worksheet PDF year. The book is the center. On a younger Sonlight History / Bible / Literature day, the parent sits in the read-aloud. That seat is not every Sonlight level, because 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects is independent study. The three programs do not do the day the same way.

Dimension
Sonlight
BookShark
Simply Charlotte Mason
Worldview
Christian and Christ-centered, and Sonlight says the curriculum teaches from the perspective of God’s truth.
Faith-neutral, in BookShark’s own FAQ, which says it does not espouse or oppose any faith and that science and history do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design.
Christian, with a Biblical approach and books that align with Christian values.
Who supplies the books
A History / Bible / Literature package and an All-Subjects package include the required books and a guide, while Instructor’s Guide sets such as 420 and 430 are sold without the books.
The package includes the required books with the guide, and optional BookShark Virtual still has students read the paper books.
Many scheduled books are sold by Simply Charlotte Mason, separately or in bundles. The year is still assembled from its plans.
Parent time
Medium, because younger History / Bible / Literature days are read-alouds and discussion, while 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects is independent study with a Student Guide and a Parent Guide.
Medium, because you still read and discuss, and BookShark says preparation is very little: you just open your binder and start teaching.
Medium, because you still read aloud, hear narration, and teach the short lessons.
Grade span
Preschool through high school by package, with Sonlight’s literature chart running from ages 3 to 4 through grades 11 and 12.
By level through high school, including Level I, Level J, and newer World and U.S. levels.
Preschool through grade 12, with preschool for ages 3 to 4 and kindergarten kept informal, while living science and elementary arithmetic start in grade 1.

There is no single match for every family. Sonlight and BookShark are literature packages with an Instructor’s Guide. Simply Charlotte Mason is the lesson-plan program you assemble. They are not the same product.
Who should pick Sonlight
Fits Christian families who want a Christ-centered literature package, an Instructor’s Guide, and faith in the year’s readings, and who can give medium parent time.
Pick Sonlight if:
You want a Christian literature program, preschool through high school, by package
You want History / Bible / Literature as the literature core, and a full All-Subjects package if you want the wider year
You want a History / Bible / Literature or All-Subjects package that includes the required books and a guide
Medium parent time is acceptable, including read-alouds in the younger years
A high budget for a package is acceptable
Skip Sonlight if you want the lesson plans you assemble, a faith-neutral spine, or a low-cost year you put together yourself. It is not secular. Younger levels are not a day the child does alone. Open-and-go here is for planning only.
Fits families who want an Instructor’s Guide and a literature year without a Christian curriculum, and who accept that origins and spirituality are left to the parent.
Pick BookShark if:
You want literature-based plans without Bible study built into the program
You are fine that science and history do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design
You want a 4-day guide and can still sit for read-alouds (medium parent time)
You want the books in the package, and you are fine that BookShark Virtual is optional
A high budget for a package that includes the books is acceptable
Skip BookShark if you need Christian readers, if you need the curriculum itself to teach evolution, or if you need a cheap or screen-only day. BookShark is not secular Sonlight. It was based on the Sonlight literature-and-guide approach with faith materials removed. That does not mean the reading lists are identical, and it does not mean they share no titles. BookShark is not a school and is not accredited. State requirements are on you.
Fits Christian families who want Charlotte Mason lesson plans, family lessons for history and enrichment, and separate math, science, and language arts for each child.
Pick Simply Charlotte Mason if:
You want a Biblical, living-books plan from preschool through grade 12, matched to the grade page
You want the lesson plans to schedule narration, habits, and short lessons
You are fine assembling the year from their plans, with many of the scheduled books sold separately or in bundles
Medium parent time for reading and teaching is acceptable
A mid budget that changes with the number of children and the plans you add is the shape you want
Skip Simply Charlotte Mason if you want one boxed curriculum with every subject and every book, a screen-first day, or a program that does the teaching without you. Preschool, for ages 3 to 4, and kindergarten are informal. Living science and elementary arithmetic start in grade 1. Grade 12 science is an elective. The total depends on which plans and books you choose.
All In One Curriculum is the secular one-time PDF grade pack. Each pack is a parent teaching guide and a student course book. It is not a worksheet-and-guide year, and it is not a literature package.
SchoolhouseTeachers.com is the Christian membership library. You pick the courses. It is not one prescribed year.
Take the quiz if neither a book spine nor those two shapes is what you want. “Neither” is a valid answer. We will not force a match.
How this page differs
This page is the category. It asks which literature-based shape fits: a Christian package, a faith-neutral package, or Charlotte Mason lesson plans you assemble.
The Charlotte Mason homeschool curriculum guide is the method. It starts from Charlotte Mason living books and short lessons, then sets the literature packages beside that method.
Sonlight vs BookShark is the Christian package versus the faith-neutral package. It does not cover Simply Charlotte Mason.
Sonlight
Fits Christian families who want a Christ-centered literature package, an Instructor’s Guide, and faith in the year’s readings, and who can give medium parent time.
Fits families who want an Instructor’s Guide and a literature year without a Christian curriculum, and who accept that origins and spirituality are left to the parent.
Fits Christian families who want Charlotte Mason lesson plans, family lessons for history and enrichment, and separate math, science, and language arts for each child.
We compared these three because families shopping for a literature-based year often land on a shipped package and a Charlotte Mason plan and treat them as one product. We did not rank them, and we did not rank them by rigor.
Sonlight is Christian and Christ-centered, high budget, medium parent time, books, and open-and-go for planning only, preschool through high school by package. History / Bible / Literature is the literature core. A full All-Subjects package is wider. Younger History / Bible / Literature days are read-alouds and discussion. The 11th grade All-Subjects package says high school courses are designed for independent study: the student reads, with a Student Guide and a Parent Guide.
BookShark is faith-neutral on its own FAQ, high budget, medium parent time, books, and open-and-go for planning only. Science and history do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design. It is not secular Sonlight. BookShark’s account is that the program was based on the Sonlight product with faith materials removed. BookShark Virtual is optional, and students still read paper books. Preparation, in BookShark’s FAQ, is very little. You just open your binder and start teaching.
Simply Charlotte Mason is Christian, mid budget, medium parent time, books, and open-and-go for planning only, preschool through grade 12. It is not one boxed package. A school-age year is family history and enrichment, plus math, science, and language arts for each child. Preschool for ages 3 to 4 and kindergarten are informal. Living science and elementary arithmetic start in grade 1. Grade 12 science is an elective. Simply Charlotte Mason also sells many of the scheduled books, separately or in bundles.
Wording was retrieved October 4, 2026, from Sonlight’s literature-based curriculum page, 11th grade curriculum page, and 11th grade All-Subjects package page; Sonlight’s blog post on Charlotte Mason and classical education; BookShark’s FAQ, BookShark Virtual page, and All About BookShark interview; and Simply Charlotte Mason’s curriculum guide, preschool page, kindergarten page, science chart, and math chart. Simply Charlotte Mason’s store and A Pageant of History book bundle pages were retrieved October 17, 2026.
Is a literature-based program secular or faith-neutral?
It depends on the program. Sonlight is Christian and Christ-centered. BookShark’s FAQ calls BookShark faith-neutral: it does not espouse or oppose any faith, and its science and history programs do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design. That is not a secular science course that teaches evolution, and BookShark is not secular Sonlight. Simply Charlotte Mason is Christian, with a Biblical approach. Match the worldview before you match the books.
Are Sonlight and Simply Charlotte Mason the same?
No. They are not the same product. Simply Charlotte Mason is the lesson-plan program you assemble: short lessons, narration, habits, and a book list, with many of the scheduled books sold by Simply Charlotte Mason. Sonlight is a literature package with an Instructor’s Guide. Sonlight’s blog says you can see Charlotte Mason influence in the program, and that language arts gives opportunities for narration, dictation, and copywork, while also saying Sonlight sits between Charlotte Mason and classical and that Sonlight is Sonlight.
What grades do these cover?
Sonlight sells packages from preschool through high school. Its literature chart runs from ages 3 to 4 through grades 11 and 12. Younger History / Bible / Literature days are read-alouds and discussion. On the 11th grade All-Subjects package, high school is independent study, with a Student Guide and a Parent Guide. BookShark identifies programs by level through high school, including Level I, Level J, and newer World and U.S. levels. Simply Charlotte Mason’s math chart runs from preschool through grade 12. Preschool is for ages 3 to 4 and is informal, kindergarten is informal preparation for formal lessons that begin in first grade, living science and elementary arithmetic start in grade 1, and grade 12 science is an elective. None of the three is an online school.
Are these open-and-go?
For planning, yes. Sonlight says you open the Instructor’s Guide and teach. BookShark’s FAQ says preparation is very little: you just open your binder and start teaching. Simply Charlotte Mason’s lesson plans already schedule the day. For the parent’s day, no. All three are medium parent time. Open-and-go is not unsupervised seatwork, and it is not a screen school.
