How to choose
The best kindergarten homeschool curriculum is the one your family can actually teach this year. Four questions sort most families quickly.
How much parent time do you have? Every program on this page needs a parent at the table in kindergarten. None of them is a day your five-year-old does alone. The publishers describe the day differently. Sonlight’s kindergarten page suggests two to four hours of formal instruction a day is plenty. Simply Charlotte Mason’s sample kindergarten schedule says each day’s activities should take about 15 to 20 minutes. Those are their words for their programs, not a rule for every child.
Christian, secular, or faith-neutral? Sonlight, Simply Charlotte Mason, and SchoolhouseTeachers.com are Christian. All In One Curriculum and Logic of English are secular. BookShark calls itself faith-neutral, which is not the same as secular. Match worldview before you match anything else.
One program for everything, or reading plus math? Some families want one kindergarten year that covers every subject. Others pick a reading program and a math program and keep the rest of the day informal. Both are valid.
What budget band? We use three words: low, mid, and high. We do not print prices, because prices and sales change. Check current packages on each publisher site.

There is no single match for every kindergartener. Five of these are full kindergarten programs, and one is a reading program. They are not the same kind of product.
Full kindergarten programs
Sonlight Kindergarten
Fits Christian families who want a Christ-centered kindergarten year built on read-alouds, a story Bible, and an Instructor’s Guide, and who can give medium parent time.
Sonlight lists History / Bible / Literature K for ages 5 to 7, grades K to 2, and All-Subjects Package K for ages 5 to 7. Pre-K is a separate program for ages 4 to 5. Sonlight describes History / Bible / Literature K as a gentle introduction to formal academics. A History / Bible / Literature program includes a year of history, geography, Bible, readers, read-alouds, the required books, and an Instructor’s Guide. The All-Subjects Package adds language arts, handwriting, science, and math, and Sonlight says Math-U-See Primer is the math in its Kindergarten All-Subjects Package, which you can customize. Sonlight offers 4-day and 5-day versions.
Pick Sonlight if:
You want a Christian literature program with Bible in the kindergarten year
You want the Instructor’s Guide to schedule the day so you are not building a book list
You want either the History / Bible / Literature core or a full All-Subjects Package that includes math
Medium parent time for read-alouds and discussion is acceptable
A high budget for a package that includes the books is acceptable
Skip Sonlight if you want a secular or faith-neutral year, a low-cost year you put together yourself, or a day your child does alone. Instructor’s Guide sets are also sold without the books, so check what you are buying. Open-and-go here is for planning only.
Fits families who want a literature-based kindergarten year with an Instructor’s Guide and no Christian curriculum, and who accept that origins and spirituality are left to the parent.
BookShark labels its programs by level, not grade. Level Pre-K is for ages 4 to 5, and Level A is for ages 5 to 7. There is no Level K. Level A is the kindergarten entry, and BookShark’s Level A page calls it a kindergarten curriculum over a 36-week period. The Level A All-Subject Package includes Reading with History A, language arts, handwriting, spelling, science, and math. BookShark’s FAQ says you can change Reader and Language Arts levels in Levels A through C.
BookShark’s FAQ calls the program faith-neutral. It does not espouse or oppose any faith, and its science and history programs do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design. BookShark is not secular Sonlight. It was based on the Sonlight literature-and-guide approach with faith materials removed. That does not mean the reading lists are identical, and it does not mean they share no titles. On preparation, the FAQ says: Very little. You just open your binder and start teaching.
Pick BookShark if:
You want literature-based kindergarten plans without Bible study built in
You are fine that science and history do not teach evolution, creationism, or intelligent design
You want a 4-day guide and can still sit for read-alouds (medium parent time)
You want an All-Subject Package with math included, and you are fine that BookShark Virtual is optional
A high budget for a package that includes the books is acceptable
Skip BookShark if you need Christian readers, need the curriculum itself to teach evolution, or want a low-cost or screen-only day. BookShark says it is not a school and cannot be accredited. State requirements are on you.
Fits Christian families who want a short, informal Charlotte Mason kindergarten year with gentle reading and handwriting lessons, and who will gather the resources themselves.
Simply Charlotte Mason’s kindergarten page says the year is gentle preparation for formal lessons that begin in first grade. The day is informal, play-based activities, gradually longer stories, and progress in reading and handwriting. On their overview chart, kindergarten reading is word-building, handwriting is letter formation practice, science is informal outdoor play, and math is informal math activities. Elementary Arithmetic starts in grade 1. Their kindergarten shopping list is the Our Preschool Life monthly boxes plus a handwriting course and a reading kit, so there is not one package price.
Pick Simply Charlotte Mason if:
You want a Christian, living-books approach to kindergarten
You want kindergarten kept informal, with formal lessons waiting for first grade
You are fine gathering resources from their list instead of buying one preset package
Medium parent time for leading short activities is acceptable
A mid budget that changes with what you add is the shape you want
Skip Simply Charlotte Mason if you want one package with the books included, a formal kindergarten math program, or a screen-first day. Kindergarten here is not a full elementary day.
Fits secular families who want a one-time PDF grade pack with a parent teaching guide and a student course book, and who will teach from the guide.
The kindergarten grade pack covers four subjects. Math has 180 daily lessons on counting, shapes, patterns, graphing, money, calendars, and an introduction to addition and subtraction. Language arts has 180 daily lessons on alphabet and letter sounds, spelling patterns and sight words, text connections, beginning writing, and setting, characters, and events. Science has 130 daily lessons on scientists, senses, force and motion, and living things. Social studies has 90 daily lessons on family, emotions, friends, basic needs, neighborhoods, maps, and community helpers.
The files are digital, and no books are mailed. You can work on a computer, tablet, or phone, or print. The parent teaching guide does not need to be printed, and the publisher suggests printing the kindergarten student pages for fine-motor practice. The publisher’s FAQ says the curriculum is secular, pursues no political or religious agenda, and includes lessons on evolution, and that families can add religious content themselves. One purchase can be used with more than one child in the same household.
Pick All In One Curriculum if:
You want a secular kindergarten year and will add faith yourself if you want it
You want a one-time grade pack, not a membership
You want the parent teaching guide to lay out the lessons
Medium parent time for teaching those lessons is acceptable
A low budget is the shape you want
Skip All In One Curriculum if you need Christian readings, a shipped box of books, or a teacher on the other side of a screen. It is not a live online school, and the publisher says it cannot be accredited because it is a curriculum, not a school. Open-and-go here is for planning only.
Fits Christian families who want a Biblical course library for the whole household, and who will build the kindergarten year from courses or from an optional School Box.
SchoolhouseTeachers.com is a Christian membership library with hundreds of courses from preschool through high school and School Boxes from Pre-K through grade 12. One membership covers your immediate family, across more than one grade at the same time. It is not one prescribed year. The Kindergarten School Box is included with membership and is an adaptable year-by-subject guide: a curriculum guide for each subject, weekly and daily checklists, and links to the courses. Its math guide is built on Building a Foundation with Kindergarten Math. SchoolhouseTeachers.com says you can adjust the box, use only some subjects, or set it aside and pick courses yourself.
Lessons are online, to view or print. Almost all courses have a written component, and many include video, interactive pieces, or other media. Some courses recommend books, often available through the library. Nothing is shipped.
Pick SchoolhouseTeachers.com if:
You want a Christian curriculum that presents God as Creator
You want one family membership that also covers older or younger siblings
You are fine choosing courses, or using the Kindergarten School Box and changing it
Medium parent time for choosing and teaching is acceptable
You might use it as the whole year, or only as a supplement
Skip SchoolhouseTeachers.com if you need a secular spine, one shipped grade package, or an accredited school of record. SchoolhouseTeachers.com says accreditation applies to schools, not curriculum providers.
Other programs come up when families shop kindergarten. Easy Peasy All-in-One is described in our Christian guide as free online Christian checklists built on mostly free web resources. The Good and the Beautiful is described there as Christian (non-denominational), with a language arts focus. Abeka and BJU Press are traditional Christian textbook publishers, and Memoria Press is classical with high parent involvement. Confirm each one’s kindergarten level on its own site before you buy.
Kindergarten reading
If you want kindergarten reading on its own, pair a reading program with informal math or a math program, and keep the rest of the day simple.
Logic of English Foundations A
Fits secular families who want a structured phonics and reading program for a beginning reader, and who can give medium teaching time.
Logic of English calls Foundations as a whole “a complete phonics, reading, spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, composition and grammar curriculum for ages 4-7,” and says Foundations A is for students who are starting their reading journey. Foundations B is the other starting point, for students who already know the sounds of A to Z and can blend and segment one-syllable words. The Foundations A Teacher’s Manual covers phonics, reading, spelling, and handwriting with scripted lessons, assessments, and games. Logic of English places by skill rather than grade, with a Starting With Foundations B Assessment to help you choose.
Foundations A is a reading program, not a full kindergarten curriculum. It does not cover math, science, history, or Bible. Plug it into another core or an informal day.
Pick Logic of English Foundations A if:
You want a secular phonics and reading program for kindergarten reading
You are willing to learn the method, not only read a daily script
Medium parent time for short lessons and games is acceptable
You already have math covered, or you are keeping math informal
A mid budget for a reading program is acceptable
Skip it if you want one program that covers every subject, or the most scripted, lowest-prep reading kit you can find.
All About Reading is the other reading program families compare most often. It is a scripted, Orton-Gillingham-inspired kit program, secular and reading only, with a lower lesson-planning load than Logic of English. See Logic of English vs All About Reading.
Several full programs above already include kindergarten reading. Sonlight’s kindergarten language arts teaches the alphabet and letter sounds, BookShark Level A includes language arts, All In One Curriculum’s kindergarten pack includes language arts, and Simply Charlotte Mason schedules short reading lessons. You may not need a separate reading program.
Kindergarten math
Families often compare these math programs when they shop kindergarten.
Math-U-See Primer. Demme Learning describes Primer as an introduction to “doing math”: writing numerals, basic counting, and an introduction to addition and subtraction, skip counting, shapes, and telling time, with manipulative blocks. Sonlight uses Math-U-See Primer as the math in its Kindergarten All-Subjects Package.
Saxon Math K. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) lists a Saxon Math K level for kindergarten. Saxon is incremental, and edition and placement matter, so confirm the right book before you buy.
Teaching Textbooks’ lowest level is Math 3. Its site lists Math 3 through Pre-Calculus, with no Math K, 1, or 2. Its Math 3 placement test says that if a student’s score falls below the cutoff, a standard textbook for 2nd graders is probably a better starting point. It is not a kindergarten option.
Several full programs above include math in the kindergarten year:
Sonlight’s All-Subjects Package K includes Math-U-See Primer, while a History / Bible / Literature program alone does not include math
BookShark’s Level A All-Subject Package includes math
All In One Curriculum’s kindergarten pack includes 180 daily math lessons
SchoolhouseTeachers.com’s Kindergarten School Box includes a math guide built on Building a Foundation with Kindergarten Math
Simply Charlotte Mason keeps kindergarten math as informal math activities, and Elementary Arithmetic starts in grade 1
Fits Christian families who want a Christ-centered kindergarten year built on read-alouds, a story Bible, and an Instructor’s Guide, and who can give medium parent time.
Fits families who want a literature-based kindergarten year with an Instructor’s Guide and no Christian curriculum, and who accept that origins and spirituality are left to the parent.
Fits Christian families who want a short, informal Charlotte Mason kindergarten year with gentle reading and handwriting lessons, and who will gather the resources themselves.
Fits Christian families who want a Biblical course library for the whole household, and who will build the kindergarten year from courses or from an optional School Box.
We compared five full kindergarten programs and one reading program because families shopping kindergarten often land on very different products and treat them as one kind of thing. We did not rank them, by rigor or anything else.
Wording was retrieved October 5, 2026, from Sonlight’s kindergarten curriculum page, Pre-K curriculum page, and homepage; BookShark’s Level A page, Pre-K All-Subject Package page, FAQ, and homepage; Simply Charlotte Mason’s kindergarten curriculum page and curriculum overview chart; All In One Curriculum’s kindergarten grade pack page; SchoolhouseTeachers.com’s FAQ, School Boxes page, Kindergarten School Box page, and course information page; Logic of English’s Where to Start page, Foundations page, and Foundations A Teacher’s Manual page; Demme Learning’s Math-U-See Primer page; HMH’s Saxon Math K page; and Teaching Textbooks’ homepage and Math 3 placement test.
Two points come from publisher pages we read on October 4, 2026 rather than today’s pages: Sonlight sells Instructor’s Guide sets without the books, and BookShark’s account that it was based on the Sonlight approach with faith materials removed.
Is there a free kindergarten homeschool curriculum here?
No. None of the programs linked on this page is free. All In One Curriculum is the low-budget option, and it is still a paid grade pack. BookShark offers a free download of three weeks of any Instructor’s Guide so you can try it first. If free is a hard filter, Easy Peasy All-in-One is the free Christian option our Christian guide describes, with daily online checklists built on mostly free web resources.
Can I teach kindergarten and first grade together?
Often, yes, depending on the program. Sonlight lists History / Bible / Literature K for ages 5 to 7 and says each program works with a range of ages so you can teach multiple children together. BookShark Level A is for ages 5 to 7, and BookShark says you can change Reader and Language Arts levels in Levels A through C. Simply Charlotte Mason puts history and enrichment in family lessons and teaches skills one child at a time. SchoolhouseTeachers.com covers the immediate family across grades on one membership. All In One Curriculum sells a pack per grade, so a kindergartner and a first grader each need their own grade, and one pack can be reused by a younger sibling later. For reading, Logic of English places by skill, not grade.
Should kindergarten be informal or formal?
That depends on the program you choose. Simply Charlotte Mason says the kindergarten year is gentle preparation for formal lessons that will begin in first grade, built from informal, play-based activities. Sonlight describes its History / Bible / Literature K as a gentle introduction to formal academics. Those are each publisher’s approach. Pick the one that matches how you want the year to feel.
Are any of these an online school?
No. None of these programs enrolls your child or acts as a school of record. BookShark says it is a curriculum provider, not a school. All In One Curriculum says it is a curriculum, not a school. SchoolhouseTeachers.com says accreditation applies to schools, not curriculum providers. You are the teacher, and state requirements are on you.
