Quick take
Choose Simply Charlotte Mason when you want Christian Charlotte Mason plans: family lessons for history and enrichment, plus math, science, and language arts for each child.
Choose Sonlight when you want a Christian literature year that arrives as a package, with an Instructor’s Guide scheduling the books.
There is no trophy winner. Both are Christian and built on real books. One is Charlotte Mason lesson plans, with many of the scheduled books sold separately or in bundles. The other is a literature package with an Instructor’s Guide, and a History / Bible / Literature or All-Subjects package includes the required books. The split is how you buy and how the day is structured, not rigor.

Day-to-day differences
Simply Charlotte Mason days are short lessons from living books, with the parent teaching. Their curriculum guide splits the work in two. Topic lessons are for the family together, including history, Bible, geography, picture study, music, poetry, and nature study. Skill lessons are one child at a time. Their sample week puts math, science, and language arts at each student’s level beside those family lessons. Every plan includes a book list, a daily itinerary, and teaching notes, so you are not building the schedule. They call the plans open-and-go. That means the plan is already written. It does not mean your child works alone. Parent time stays medium.
Preschool and kindergarten are not that school-age day. Their preschool page is for three- and four-year-olds and calls the learning informal and play-based, with formal lessons waiting. Kindergarten is gentle preparation for formal lessons that begin in first grade. On their math chart, preschool and kindergarten are informal math activities, and elementary arithmetic starts in grade 1. On their science chart, living science courses start in grade 1, and grade 12 science is a science elective and a living book of your choice.
Simply Charlotte Mason also sells many of the books its plans schedule, one at a time or in book bundles. For history, A Pageant of History, their four-year history plan, has book bundles for each year, in family, elementary, middle school, and high school versions. A Geography Books Bundle holds the three family books used in every year of This Beautiful Earth, their geography plan. Even so, it is not one boxed curriculum with every subject, and the cost depends on which plans and books you choose.
Their custom planner builds a shopping list and a free printable daily planner from their recommendations. You need an account to save your plan.
Simply Charlotte Mason accepts returns of physical and digital items within 60 days of receiving them. A kit or a set of books has to come back complete, digital items need confirmation that you deleted your copies, and you pay return shipping. Confirm the current terms on Simply Charlotte Mason’s return page before you rely on them.
Sonlight is a complete, Christian, literature-based program for preschool through high school, fully planned, with open-and-go Instructor’s Guides. The homepage says to open the guide and teach. On younger levels, the History / Bible / Literature day is read-alouds, readers, and discussion scheduled in the guide. The 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects pages describe high school as independent study: the student reads, with a Student Guide and a Parent Guide, and that is not the same day. History / Bible / Literature is the basis: a year of history and geography, Bible, and readers and literature. Language arts, science, math, and electives are additional programs when you want a fuller package. “Open-and-go” means you are not building the book list. Parent time stays medium.
Sonlight’s Love to Learn, Love to Teach guarantee depends on what you bought. On a complete All-Subjects or History / Bible / Literature package, you have up to one year to use the first half (18 weeks), then a full refund of the purchase price if you return the package. Return shipping is not refunded, and materials after week 18 must be unused and resalable. The six-month rule is a different policy, for individual items and single-subject packages, and it is not a full refund of used materials. Confirm the current terms on Sonlight’s guarantee page before you rely on them.
Do not treat these as the same book list. Simply Charlotte Mason is Charlotte Mason lesson plans with narration, habits, and short lessons. Sonlight is a literature curriculum woven by an Instructor’s Guide. That does not make the plans the same product.

We compared these two because families shopping for a Christian living-books year often land on Charlotte Mason plans and a literature package and treat them as the same product. They are not. We did not rank them by how Christian they are, and we did not rank them by rigor.
Simply Charlotte Mason is Christian, mid budget, medium parent time, books, and open-and-go for planning only, preschool through grade 12. The school-age year is assembled: family history and enrichment, plus per-child math, science, and language arts. Preschool and kindergarten are informal. Which is better, Simply Charlotte Mason or Sonlight?
Neither is better for every family. Simply Charlotte Mason when you want Charlotte Mason lesson plans and are fine assembling the year, with many of the scheduled books sold by them. Sonlight when you want a Christian literature package and an Instructor’s Guide that already includes the schedule. Take the quiz if the method is not your first filter.
Is Sonlight a Charlotte Mason curriculum?
It is not Simply Charlotte Mason’s lesson-plan program. Simply Charlotte Mason is lesson plans you assemble: short lessons, narration, habits, and a book list. Sonlight is a literature package with an Instructor’s Guide. Sonlight’s blog says the program has Charlotte Mason influence, and that language arts includes narration, dictation, and copywork, while also saying it is hard to file under one philosophy. They are not the same product.
Is Simply Charlotte Mason one boxed curriculum?
Not as one package with every subject and every book. You buy the plans for each subject, and the mix changes with how many children you have. A school-age year is family history and enrichment, plus math, science, and language arts for each child. Simply Charlotte Mason also sells many of the scheduled living books, including book bundles for each year of A Pageant of History and a Geography Books Bundle.
Are both open-and-go?
For planning, yes. Simply Charlotte Mason’s lesson plans already tell you what to do. Sonlight’s Instructor’s Guide says to open it and teach. For the parent’s day, no: both are medium parent time. Open-and-go is not unsupervised seatwork, and it is not a live school.
Do they cover preschool and high school?
Yes, in different shapes. Simply Charlotte Mason’s charts run from preschool through grade 12. Preschool is for ages 3 and 4 and is informal, kindergarten is informal preparation, and grade 12 science is an elective. Sonlight sells packages from preschool through high school, including older levels for grades 11 and 12. Match the grade page or the level chart to your child. Neither one is an online school.
