Quick take

Choose Memoria Press when you want a classical Christian year you teach at home, with Latin from second grade, recitation and memory work, and logic and rhetoric in high school.

Choose Sonlight when you want a Christian literature year built on read-alouds, readers, and discussion, with an Instructor’s Guide scheduling the books.

There is no trophy winner. Both are Christian, both sit in a high budget band, and both are open-and-go for planning only. Memoria Press’s manual writes the daily lesson plans for you, but parent teaching time is high. Sonlight’s parent time is medium, and 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects is independent study. The split is classical versus literature-based, not rigor.

Day-to-day differences

Memoria Press days happen at your table. Memoria Press describes a classical Christian curriculum for preschool through grade 12. Latin plays a primary role, along with classical history, literature, and the Great Books. A grade-level Classical Core package is a full year and includes daily lesson plans in a curriculum manual. The second grade manual lists recitation, Latin and grammar, reading, math, copybook and memory work, cursive, and literature and enrichment. Latin starts in second grade with Prima Latina. The Complete Preschool Curriculum Package is a gentle introduction (prayer, alphabet, numbers, and picture books), not a Latin program. In kindergarten, the science and enrichment books are a separate supplemental set, not part of the core package. In high school, the ninth grade core includes Traditional Logic, and Memoria Press sells a full-year Classical Rhetoric course for grades 9 and up. The manual lowers the “what do we do today” problem. It does not lower the teaching. That is why we call it open-and-go for planning only, with parent time still high.

Sonlight days on younger levels are read-alouds, readers, and discussion from an Instructor’s Guide. Sonlight describes a complete, Christian, literature-based curriculum for preschool through high school, with open-and-go Instructor’s Guides. History / Bible / Literature is the basis: a year of history and geography, Bible, and readers and read-alouds. Language arts, science, math, and electives are added when you want a fuller package. Sonlight’s philosophy page says the program requires significant parental involvement and that the parent serves as a mentor. The 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects pages describe high school as independent study: the student reads, with a Student Guide and a Parent Guide. A History / Bible / Literature package or an All-Subjects package includes the required books and a guide. Instructor’s Guide sets such as 420 and 430 are sold without the books. “Open-and-go” means you are not building the book list. Parent time stays medium.

The overlap is real. Both are Christian, both come as a boxed or packaged year with daily plans, and both put real books in front of your child. Sonlight’s blog places Sonlight between Charlotte Mason and classical, and it points to the timeline and weekly Bible memory work as the classical side. That is not the same day as Memoria Press, where Latin, recitation, and formal logic carry the year. Do not treat these as one program with different book lists.

Who should pick Memoria Press

Fits Christian families who want to teach a classical year at home and can give high parent time.

Pick Memoria Press if:

  • You want a preschool introduction or a grade-level core through grade 12
  • You want Latin from second grade, not in the preschool package
  • You want recitation and memory work written into the plan
  • You want a curriculum manual with daily lesson plans, and you are still willing to teach them
  • A high budget for books is acceptable

Skip Memoria Press if you need low parent time, if you want read-alouds and discussion to carry the day instead of Latin and recitation, or if you do not want Latin in the grade-level cores. In kindergarten, plan on the science and enrichment books as a separate supplement.

Who should pick Sonlight

Fits Christian families who want a literature package with an Instructor’s Guide and faith in the year’s readings, and who can give medium parent time.

Pick Sonlight if:

  • You want a Christian literature program, preschool through high school, by package
  • You want History / Bible / Literature as the core, and you will add language arts, science, or math if you want them in the same buy
  • You want younger years built on read-alouds and discussion
  • You like that 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects is independent study, with a Student Guide for your teen and a Parent Guide for you
  • You are ready for a high budget for a package that includes the books

Skip Sonlight if you want Latin and formal logic at the center of the year, a non-Christian spine, or a low-cost year you put together yourself. An Instructor’s Guide set such as 420 or 430 does not include the books.

How we compared

We compared these two because families who search Sonlight vs Memoria Press are usually choosing between a classical Christian year and a Christian literature year. We did not rank them by how Christian they are, and we did not rank them by rigor.

Memoria Press is Christian, high budget, high parent time, books, and open-and-go for planning only, preschool through grade 12. Latin starts in second grade, not in the preschool package. Logic and rhetoric come in high school. Kindergarten science and enrichment books are a separate supplement.

Sonlight is Christian, high budget, medium parent time, books, and open-and-go for planning only, preschool through high school by package. History / Bible / Literature is the core. Younger levels are read-alouds and discussion, and 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects is independent study.

Memoria Press wording is from its homepage, Preschool Curriculum Set page, Kindergarten Curriculum Set page, Kindergarten Supplemental Science & Enrichment Set page, Second Grade Curriculum Set page, Ninth Grade page, and Classical Rhetoric page. Sonlight wording is from its homepage, About page, educational philosophy page, literature-based curriculum page, History / Bible / Literature B package page, 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects package pages, Instructor’s Guide 420 and 430 set pages, History / Civics 420 books-only page, and its blog post on Charlotte Mason and classical education. We retrieved all of these on October 5, 2026.

FAQ

Which is better, Memoria Press or Sonlight?

Neither is better for every family. Memoria Press when you want to teach a classical Christian year with Latin, recitation, and logic. Sonlight when you want a Christian literature year with read-alouds and discussion. Take the quiz if the method is not your first filter.

Is Sonlight classical or Charlotte Mason?

Sonlight’s own blog says it sits somewhere between the two. It says you can see Charlotte Mason influence in the Instructor’s Guides, and that Sonlight language arts gives opportunities for narration, dictation, and copywork. It points to the timeline and weekly Bible memory work as the classical influence. Its answer to the question is that Sonlight is Sonlight. Memoria Press is the classical program on this page.

Are both open-and-go?

For planning, yes. Memoria Press’s curriculum manual writes your daily lesson plans, and you still teach them, so parent teaching time is high. Sonlight’s Instructor’s Guide schedules the books, and parent time is medium, with 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects designed for independent study. Open-and-go means the plan is written. It does not mean the plan teaches itself.

When does Latin start in Memoria Press?

In second grade, with Prima Latina. The preschool package is a gentle introduction with prayer, alphabet, numbers, and picture books, not Latin. Sonlight’s History / Bible / Literature core is built around history, Bible, and literature rather than Latin.

Do both cover preschool through high school?

Yes, in different shapes. Memoria Press sells grade-level packages from preschool through grade 12, and in kindergarten the science and enrichment books are a separate supplement. Sonlight sells packages from preschool through high school, and its 11th and 12th grade All-Subjects packages include a Student Guide and a Parent Guide. Match the grade page or the level chart to your child. Neither one is an online school.
